A word from the 'Gaffer'

When Sarah asked the question “could we walk Hadrian's Wall” there was only ever going to be one answer. Yes of course we can, and actually let’s run it!\ We are all so much stronger than we think we are, we just have to be brave and believe!\ \ That seems so long ago now! Things have changed, priorities reordered and patience engaged.

\ After the launch in September, Fundraising was the focus and the pounds rolled in! The hundreds then became thousands and by Christmas we had hit £10k. With the start of 2020 came the new focus of training. We had to be in good shape for May. Some of us were runners, some cyclists, some triathletes and some walkers. But all of us were novices to 90 miles over 4 days. Each month we looked at a particular aspect to support our bodies whilst training and on the challenge. Feet, muscles and massage were all things to be considered. The enemies of blisters and DOMS had to be prepared for. The miles started to ramp up over the winter weekends as we practiced ‘Time on our feet’. A RTW training community began to take shape. Our last adventure weekend was full of love and laughter, in the dark, around the Dam and in the bogs!

Then came along something that no one had anticipated to turn our RTW world upside down. Coronavirus, lockdown and death like we have never seen.\ There are things that can not be changed. But you can adapt and make the most of what we have. “Concentrate on what you can do, not on what you can’t.” Train once a day, make the body strong and keep the mind focused. We have to be patient and await 2021 to complete our RTW mission. But in the meantime we can, Run 90 Miles in May, or we can run any of the stages virtually as part of the relay on the planned weekend. I hope we all mark our commitment to RTW in some way in May.\ \ For me I have the crazy idea that I will complete the whole of the 92 miles over the 4 days. I won’t be running it all, some I will run/walk. I will do some outdoors and some on a treadmill indoors. Let’s see if this old lady is brave enough to be a “Run The Wall Warrior.” Watch this space!
